Fishing, Fittleworth and Elderberry Syrup!
A few weeks back whilst Coco was away on her school trip, I took the opportunity to spend some quality time with Gus.

We travelled to nearby Arundel to visit Chalk Springs Fishery, where a very kind and patient Steve gave Gus a casting and fishing lesson whilst I wondered in the surroundings - and had a little forage! After spying an abundance of elderberries I simply had to ask Steve if I could take some home to create a syrup - I’ll be sharing the recipe below.
Chalk Springs Fishery is part of the Arundel Estate and used to be used for watercress beds! With crystal clear waters fed by natural springs, it’s the perfect place for a day out catching Rainbow and Brown Trout. I highly recommend it and I know Gus absolutely loved it.
Following the lesson, and after being rained off from our Arundel wander, we headed to Fittleworth Stores for lunch with Sigh. If you’ve not visited Fittleworth Stores, you are missing out! They stock wonderful local wares in their shop (including my granola!), have a cafe, butchers, playground, football pitch, and even a post office! It’s one of absolute my favourite shops.
After our lunch, we headed home and I got to making a good stock of elderberry syrup to take us through the Autumn. Elderberries contain more vitamin C than oranges, lots of vitamin A, and work to boost your immune system as the colder weather approaches. Isn’t it wonderful how our hedgerows work as nature’s seasonal pharmacy?
