Sigh’s Guide to Buying Sustainable and Delicious Fish

Welcome to this week's Ask Charlie, where we explore the world of seafood with industry expert, my husband Simon!

With almost 30 years of experience in the fish business, Sigh shares valuable insider insights on sustainable fish choices and where to find the best options. Before Sigh, I wasn’t a big fish eater – but the tide has certainly turned and I simply adore it now.

Simon highlights the seafood industry's early commitment to sustainability and the importance of the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), leading the way in responsible fishing practices. The MSC plays a significant role in monitoring fish stocks and environmental impacts to ensure responsible fishing practices, however, it’s important to note that not all sustainable options have the MSC certification.

He also talks about where to buy your fish, suggesting you consider online fishmongers like the fabulous Rockfish (scroll down for your exclusive discount!) or innovative retailers such as Waitrose and M&S for a variety of responsibly sourced seafood options.

He then discusses the types of fish and their qualities and flavours, from meatier fish such as tuna, wild Alaskan salmon, or swordfish to white and ground fish like haddock, lemon sole, and sardines (not my favourite, but Sigh loves them!).

Lastly, he covers the role of farming in seafood and how farmed fish can offer convenient and flavourful alternatives to wild-caught varieties, provided sustainable farming practices are followed.

With delicious choices for every palate, Sigh and I implore you to make informed and sustainable fish selections when planning your seafood dishes. It’s so important to be mindful of your impact whilst enjoying what the ocean has to offer, and don’t be afraid to ask the experts!

Use code CHARLIE25 to enjoy 25% off your first Rockfish order, when spending over £40.
