Early Spring in the Garden | Planting Sweet Peas & Garden Plans
Welcome back to this week’s Ask Charlie.
Today I’m bringing you to one of my happiest places - my tiny greenhouse and the garden just beginning to wake up after winter.
Early spring in the garden is always such a special moment. The ground is still damp from winter, the air is cool, but little signs of life are quietly appearing everywhere. The daffodils are blooming, primroses are popping up along the banks, and the hellebores are looking particularly beautiful this year.
In today’s video I begin the very first seeds of the season. I’m planting sweet peas, something I really missed growing last year, along with a tray of tomato seeds. These are simple little jobs, but they feel like the beginning of everything to come. There is something very grounding about standing in the greenhouse, filling trays with compost, and placing seeds into the soil knowing that with a bit of patience they will grow.
After that we take a gentle walk around the garden. I share what is already growing, what survived the winter, and some of the small plans I have for the months ahead. This year I’m keeping things quite simple, sweet peas, beans, a few vegetables, and some flowers that I can cut and bring into the house.
Gardening doesn’t have to be complicated or overwhelming. It can simply be about spending a little time outside, listening to the birds, and watching the seasons slowly change.
If you’re feeling like you don’t quite have the time or energy to do everything in the garden, I hope this video reminds you that even the smallest steps count.
Love,
Charlie x
