Riding & Road Safety Tips with the British Horse Society (Essential Guide)
I had such an interesting chat with Alan Hiscox from the British Horse Society about road safety for riders and drivers. Alan shared his experience from 32 years in the police, including time with the Mounted Police in London, and we covered the Dead Slow campaign, which focuses on keeping both horses and riders safe on the roads.
We talked about everything from how to ride safely, being aware of your surroundings, high-vis gear for riders and horses, and even how electric vehicles can affect horses. I’ve learned so much about visibility, the right times of day to ride, and how drivers and riders can work together to prevent accidents.
We also went through practical tips like wearing reflective clothing, leg bands for horses, and using flashing lights if you ride during low light. Alan explained how to report incidents and highlighted the statistics of road accidents involving horses.
It’s an essential watch if you ride, drive, or just want to be safer on the roads. Fifi, my horse, joined us and looked amazing in her high-vis gear too!
Check out the links in the description for the British Horse Society, the Dead Slow campaign, and the Horse Eye app, they are all so important to take note of.
